Blood flow through the heart flashcards

27 free flashcards that walk blood through the heart in order: every chamber, valve and vessel, and where the blood is oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor.

Every card checked against the sources below.

What’s in the deck

  • Every step in order: right atrium, tricuspid valve, right ventricle, pulmonary valve and trunk, lungs, pulmonary veins, left atrium, mitral valve, left ventricle, aortic valve, aorta.
  • Oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor at each chamber, which is where most mistakes happen.
  • The valve parts: how many cusps each AV valve has, what the chordae tendineae and papillary muscles do, and why the semilunar valves need neither.
  • The why cards: why the left ventricle wall is thicker, and what keeps the two sides from mixing.

Tip: The pulmonary arteries carry oxygen-poor blood and the pulmonary veins oxygen-rich blood. Arteries leave the heart and veins return to it, whatever the oxygen.

How to study it

  • Say the path out loud from the right atrium to the aorta, then check yourself card by card.
  • Draw it once from memory after a day or two. The anatomy and physiology study guide has what to memorize for the rest of the course.

All 27 cards, with answers

Which three vessels empty deoxygenated blood directly into the right atrium?
Superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, and coronary sinus
  2. 2
Does the right atrium contain oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor blood?
    Oxygen-poor
  3. 3
Which valve lies between the right atrium and the right ventricle?
    Tricuspid valve (right atrioventricular valve)
  4. 4
How many cusps does the tricuspid valve possess?
    Three
  5. 5
Does the right ventricle contain oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor blood?
    Oxygen-poor
  6. 6
Which valve does blood cross when exiting the right ventricle?
    Pulmonary semilunar valve
  7. 7
Into which vessel is blood directly ejected from the right ventricle?
    Pulmonary trunk
  8. 8
The pulmonary trunk divides into the right and left _____, which transport oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
    pulmonary arteries
  9. 9
The pulmonary trunk divides into the right and left pulmonary arteries, which transport _____ blood to the lungs.
    oxygen-poor
  10. 10
What functional distinction sets pulmonary arteries apart from most systemic arteries?
    They carry oxygen-poor blood.
  11. 11
Where does oxygen-poor blood pick up oxygen in the pulmonary circuit?
In the pulmonary capillaries that surround the alveoli of the lungs
  12. 12
Which vessels return newly oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart?
    Pulmonary veins
  13. 13
How many pulmonary veins typically drain into the left atrium?
    Four (two from each lung)
  14. 14
Does the left atrium contain oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor blood?
    Oxygen-rich
  15. 15
Which valve regulates blood flow between the left atrium and the left ventricle?
Mitral valve (bicuspid valve / left atrioventricular valve)
  16. 16
How many cusps make up the mitral (bicuspid) valve?
    Two
  17. 17
During ventricular systole, the _____ valve prevents the backflow of oxygen-rich blood into the left atrium.
    mitral (bicuspid)
  18. 18
During ventricular systole, the mitral (bicuspid) valve prevents the backflow of _____ blood into the left atrium.
    oxygen-rich
  19. 19
Does the left ventricle contain oxygen-rich or oxygen-poor blood?
    Oxygen-rich
  20. 20
Why is the myocardium of the left ventricle substantially thicker than that of the right ventricle?
It must generate high pressure to pump blood throughout the high-resistance systemic circulation.
  21. 21
Which valve does blood pass through as it leaves the left ventricle?
    Aortic semilunar valve
  22. 22
Into which vessel is oxygen-rich blood directly pumped from the left ventricle?
    Ascending aorta
  23. 23
What anatomical structure prevents the mixing of oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood between the ventricles?
    Interventricular septum
  24. 24
What tendon-like cords anchor the atrioventricular valve cusps to papillary muscles?
    Chordae tendineae
  25. 25
What is the primary mechanical function of papillary muscles and chordae tendineae?
Preventing the eversion (prolapse) of AV valve cusps into the atria during ventricular contraction
  26. 26
Unlike AV valves, semilunar valves lack chordae tendineae and close when blood fills their _____ during ventricular diastole.
    pocket-like cusps
  27. 27
Which heart chamber receives venous blood returning from the coronary circulation?
    Right atrium
